A group of islands that you have to visit
The Balearic Islands is a group of five wonderful islands that represent one of the major tourist attractions in Spain; Ibiza, Formentera, Menorca, Mallorca and Cabrera are always ready to receive their visitors with 300 days of sun every single year, with spectacular beaches, a warm sun, a rich cultural life and a strong personality that makes them one of the preferred holiday destinations in the country.
A short history lesson
Numerous prehistoric findings were made on the Balearic Islands, all of great importance for the entire continent. Menorca is known as being an open air museum, due to the 500 findings made there, but all the islands have reminiscences of the past cultures that ruled over them at one time or another: the Greeks, the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Byzanthinians, or the Moors. However, starting with the 13th century, the islands entered under Christian dominance: Mallorca was conquered by Jaime I in 1229, while 1231 is the year when Menorca became part of Aragon. Ibiza was originally a Carthaginian colony, but the Romans conquered it; the Moors then took it from the Romans and lost it in favor of Jaime I, so this island has a very agitated history that I am sure will capture your attention.
Having fun on the islands
The islands have the typical Spanish atmosphere, so it is easy to understand why the fiestas and the celebrations have a very important role to play in their lives. The archaic traditions are just the consequence of their rich old civilizations, so you will be welcomed by colorful costumes, ceremonial dances and last but not least, by melodious music that will help you enter the much wanted good mood.
If you decide to travel to Menorca, choose June, as this is the month that hosts the famous San Juan fiesta, a 600 years old one. Ibiza is ceremonial in May, with its Santa Eulalia, while Mallorca’s festivals start in February and last until December. Since you are in the Balearic Islands, you have to try their sophisticated and original recipes, as they will nourish all your senses. The islands represent the place where the mayonnaise was born, but they have a long list of tasty dishes: turkey in almond sauce, pork with eggs and apples, or pigeon in chestnut sauce. Bon appétit and enjoy your staying!
