The beaches of Barcelona are, despite their proximity to the second largest city in Spain, surprisingly clean. Popular amongst tourists and locals, the beach has been tided up and remains clean and welcoming. The local municipality takes pride in the beaches appearance and ensures it is a welcoming place for people to relax. The facilities are well developed with lockers, cafes and restaurants as well as umbrellas and beach loungers.

You can head to the Nova Icaria beach for the most popular place to catch some rays. Horrendously busy during the summer months, this beach is for those who like crowds and atmosphere. There are some great bars and well as restaurants on the beach and the location near to the Olympic Marina means that you are never far away from a great meal at the marina.

Bogatell

The Bogatell beach is much longer than its sister Nove Icaria and is boarded by a nice promenade which locals use for an evening stroll, roller skating as well cycling. Less busy than the adjoining beach, the Bogatell does have some casual dining facilities on its edge, but no bars!

Mar Bella

The Mar Bella beach is a little further out and next to the Bogatell. A nudist beach, this is more secluded and also boasts a nice park in the vicinity in which to take a nap or to have a spot of lunch.

Barceloneta

A long atmospheric stretch of beach with a pleasant walkway running along its edge, Barceloneta caters well for the tourist. There are plenty of burger bars and pizza places along the walkway as well as a few Spanish restaurants. If you walk on up the beach you’ll eventually reach San Sebastian beach which is a much loved spot for locals with a great atmosphere and lots of people.

If you can you should get a trip out towards the beaches on the periphery of the city, then all the better. Cleaner and with less crowding, the out of town beaches are more relaxed and a great day trip.

The southern beaches are great for all the family as they are generally safer with calm waters and long sandy beaches, making them ideal for children. The northern beaches will be better for water sports with slightly large waves and water with more depth. Whatever your choice, there’s plenty to choose from – there’s the beach of Casteldefells and quite close to the city. It caters well to tourists and has a good range of facilities. And if you have a car, head to Sitges with lovely beaches and great facilities.
