Paseo del Prado
Madrid boasts a number of very interesting museums, many of which are reflective of the city’s varied and rich history. There are many museums to suit a wide variety of interests and tastes. If you’re interested in art you’ll certainly be spoilt in Madrid. Head to one of the most prominent galleries in the art world at the Paseo del Prado. Situated in an old building, the Prado gives you the chance to view paintings and art work from a number of famous artists including El Greco, Rubens, Mengs and more. To get to the Paseo del Prado you should get off the metro at the Banco de Espana.
Museo Thyssen Bornemisza and the Museo Nacional Centro
From there, art buffs can head to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza, right near the Paseo del Prado. Here you’ll be able to view some very interesting works spanning hundreds of years and get close to some beautiful original tapestries and statues. If you are still in the mood for art, head to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Film buffs love this museum as it boasts a wide range of modern art including photos, films and other modern art forms. Take the metro to Atocha to get to this museum on the Calle Santa Isabel.
Palacio Real
Those interested in architecture and royal history need to stop by the Palacio Real. Although the royal family do not reside here any more, the rooms of the king have been opened to tourists and visitors to see the carefully preserved rooms. Aside from getting a sneaky peak at the interior of a real royal palace, which includes some interesting art works by El Greco and Caravaggio, visitors should also take time to look at the beautiful gardens and the structure of the building which is a wonderful sight indeed. To get to this wonderful palace you need to get off the metro at Opera.
Other museums
Aside from these main museums those interested in history should head to the archaeological museum – the Museo Arqueologico Nacional for some interesting artefacts. Also worth a visit are the Museo Municipal and the Museo de la Ciudad, as well as the Museo Lazaro Galdiano and the Museo Sorolla. There are also the museums of Las Descalzas Reales and De La Encarnation, followed by the Fundacion de la Casa de Alba.
