The Spanish are known worldwide for their love of staying out late. Thanks to the wonderful and widely practised tradition of an afternoon siesta, young and old alike have the energy to enjoy the pleasant evenings long into the night. Be prepared for things not to get going until late –many restaurants will likely be empty at 7 or 8, when northern Europeans prefer to dine. To take part in the great atmosphere and avail of excellent Spanish hospitality you need to be heading out for dinner at 9 or even 10pm!

Take a stroll

But before you wonder what to do with yourself before then, don’t panic. Notice the families with their children or old couples walking arm in arm down the boulevard or central avenues. Many Spanish cities and towns will have an area where locals love to parade before dinner, and many boulevards will have a party feel with local vendors selling drinks and ice-creams, churros and small treats for kids.

Aperitif and dinner

Now you’ve earned a rest, but its only 8pm! Never fear, you need an aperitif! Head to a local outdoor café and enjoy a quiet drink whilst surveying the local scene. Then, finally, you’ll be able to head to your favourite local restaurant to sample delicious seafood or paella. Of course, you also need to try tapas, the Spanish tradition of small plates of food placed in the middle and sampled by everyone – small potatoes, chorizo, omelette, prawns, ham, melon……you name it!

Party

When you’re done, head out on the town. The clubs will get started late, but that’s OK because you need time to digest your meal. You’ll notice people arriving to the clubs at 12am, and they’ll party into the small hours. If you’re looking for something more low key, why not try a local jazz bar or an outdoor café with live music. There are also Flamenco shows which can be viewed whilst eating your dinner.

Whatever your tastes, Spain has nightlife for all. The Spanish love of children mean they’re generally accepted in to restaurants and café-bars until late in the evening. The warm nights make it a joy to eat outside, and all Spanish towns and cities will have at least one area where you’ll find restaurants, cafes and bars all within short distance of each other. Old towns will have many atmospheric areas on cobbled streets, and the new areas of town will offer great restaurants and bars, as well as clubs.
