Although the plays and shows in Madrid may be better known on a global scale, the theatre in Barcelona is a great night out with a wide range of shows and performances to suit every taste and all the family. Like the city itself, Barcelona’s arts scene is a thriving and buzzing one which includes a large variety of work.

There are many theatres in Barcelona. On the Carrer Montseny you’ll find the Teatre Lliure. Probably the most renowned theatre in the city and originally became famous for its plays in the local Catalan language. Housed since 2001 in the old agricultural palace, the theatre boasts wholly modern technology which makes the running of the shows a lot easier. You can check out their website on www.teatrelliiure.com.

There’s also the Tivoli, built in 1919, and the Teatre Poliorama. Situated in the Academy of Arts and Sciences on the world famous La Rambla, the theatre has been in operation since 1982. Shut down on numerous occasions and reopened every time, the theatre is a mainstay on the arts scene.

If you’re interested in performing arts such as music, dramas and dancing then check out the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya. Government created and recently completed, the theatre is housed in a post-modernist structure. With three different staging spaces, the theatre is able to show a wide range of different art forms in the one building. You can find out more on their website www.tnc.es.

There’s also the famous El Mercat de les Flors on Carrer Lleida. Relatively new in construction the building contains a large dome and 3 performing theatres as is the standard, each showing their own schedules.

If concerts are more your thing, then head to the Palau de la Musica Catalana, one of the most well known concert venues in Europe. Like many sites in Barcelona such as Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, the modernist building that houses the Palau de la Musica Catalana is a UNESCO world heritage site. Here you can hear some wonderful musical treats including local Catalan music, jazz and orchestras. It’s very popular with locals and tourists alike. You can find out more on the www.palaumusica.org.

Finally, you can head to the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The organisation has been around since 1847 and twice destroyed by fire the theatre has managed to retain its entrance hall and well as its arch. The newly renovated and salvaged building has stood on the site of the original since 1999.
